10 Coolest All-Inclusive Resorts

Can all-inclusive resorts really be as good as the world’s most luxurious 5-Star and 5-Diamond properties?
Absolutely. In some cases they are one and the same.
The appeal of the all-inclusive vacation is obvious: you know what your total cost is going to be before you ever leave home, and in many cases, these vacations are good values compared to buying food, beverages, lodging, and activities a la carte. This is one reason why cruises, which are almost always all-inclusive, are so popular for families, and increasingly, resorts are offering the same structure.
But there is a downside to the all-inclusive model, when quantity does not equal quality. All your meals may be included, but the food often is not good, with disappointing buffets and chewy steaks. The margaritas and “champagne” may be free flowing, but this usually involves very cheap tequila and sugary mix, and the bubbly is rarely champagne. Accommodations at all-inclusive resorts are sometimes closer to college dorms than traditional hotel rooms. And the most interesting activities, like off-site excursions and “deluxe” sports, are usually excluded.
Usually but not always – here are ten surprising exceptions to the ordinary paradigm, ten truly unique all-inclusives that buck the mass market model and deliver on the promise of excellence, from food to service to activities, and in most cases, have a one-of-a-kind experience that sets them radically apart. Some are simply much more luxurious take on the mainstream all-inclusive beach resort concept, but others offer an entirely different vacation experience that travelers may not associate with “all-inclusive.” It is not just tropical resorts that offer this kind of pricing structure, but safari lodges, eco-adventure and nature retreats, even ski resorts. They are not necessarily bargains, with some so luxurious they attract a stream of A-list Hollywood celebrities, but they are almost always values when compared to their a la carte luxury peers.
At the tiny end of the spectrum is Twin Farms, a boutique resort in Vermont that is consistently among the highest rated on earth. Twin Farms is not just a great small resort, it is arguably the best small resort in the United States, and was named just that by readers of the influential Zagat Survey (Number One Small Hotel US). Twin Farms also received the highest possible ranking from the highly critical Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report, Grand Award Winner, and has been awarded the highest Forbes 5-Star (previously Mobil 5-Star) rating for 16 consecutive years, yet offers just 20 luxurious accommodations on 300-acres of private and pristine countryside in rural Vermont. Most of the lodgings at Twin Farms are standalone luxury homes, each decorated with a theme, like dogs or fishing, and adorned with museum quality original art by renowned artists. There are about 50 U.S. hotels and resorts that receive the coveted 5-Star rating from Forbes – out of thousands of properties – but only two are all-inclusive.
Meals at Twin Farms are truly gourmet, customized to every guest’s need, and all are included in nightly rates. So are alcoholic beverages, including sommelier wine pairings at lunch and dinner. So are all activities (expect spa treatments), and the resort has its own private downhill and cross country ski areas in winter, and in summer a hiking trail network, fishing, tennis, and much more. Want hot cookies and milk in the middle of the night? A champagne picnic lunch delivered trailside on your hike? All included. Of course, this luxury does not come cheap – nightly rates for two start at $1300.
At the larger end of the spectrum are the two Grand Velas resorts in Mexico, one on the east coast in the Riviera Maya, and one near Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific. Grand Velas made history among all-inclusives by earning the highest possible AAA 5-Diamond rating at both properties. This duo takes the traditional large beach resort all-inclusive model and raises the bar high, with fine dining restaurants that are a la carte, no buffets, top shelf liquor, 24-hour room service included, butlers, yoga and pilates classes, and first class service and amenities all around. The hotels also get 4-Diamonds for their cuisine, have won awards for their spas, and feature accommodations that rival any luxury hotels. Rooms are all suites, starring at 1,000 square feet, most with hot tubs, and the full slate of decadent touches from spa-like bathrooms to flat screen TVs.
Then there are all-inclusives that offer a unique activity or attraction in addition to first class lodging and meals. One of the most surprising is Portillo, Chile, the only all-inclusive destination ski resort in the world. Portillo is Chile’s premier ski mountain, high in the Andes, with world class terrain and deep annual snowfalls, and many national ski teams and Olympians train here. What few people know is that since there is no town and no other place to stay, the entire resort is operated like a cruise ship, with weeklong package stays in the comfy Hotel Portillo that include lodging, lift tickets, and four meals daily (breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner), along with yoga and other classes, movies in the hotel theater, a disco, even a ski and boot valet. Rates start at just $1790 per person for the 7-nights lodging, skiing, and all the meals and entertainment, something you would be hard pressed to equal at Aspen or Vail.
From luxury African safari lodges to the natural wonders of Patagonia to trekking in the Himalayas of Bhutan to an entire Colorado ghost town reborn as a decadent adventure resort, the world’s best all-inclusives offer surprising vacations for every taste. These are ten of the very best:

10 Top Beach Resorts Around The World

City weekends and mountain retreats have their place, but nothing says vacation like a beach resort escape. Startle.com compiled an ultimate list of 10 of the best resorts around the world—from Seychellesto Maui—with soft sand, crystal clear water and luxurious accommodations. Before you plan your next getaway, check out our list and daydream-inducing slideshow.
Click here for Forbes Travel Guide’s list of five of the best Southern California beaches on Startle.com.
Amanpuri, Phuket
Aman Resorts’ flagship property on the west coast of Phuket stays true to its name—meaning “place of peace.” Sitting on a coconut plantation overlooking the turquoise Andaman Sea, the resort hosts guests in 72 minimalist-designed pavilions and villas, some with private pools. When you’re not lounging on the crescent-shaped, white sand beach with a cocktail in hand, board one of the resort’s 20 boats and set out to explore—the nearby Phi Phi Islands offer great snorkeling and diving. You can also go windsurfing, sailing and snorkeling right off the resort’s private beach.
Cotton House, Mustique
With just 17 rooms (including a two-bedroom, butler-staffed villa), this beachfront resort is located on an 18th-century sugar plantation on the exclusive Caribbean island of Mustique. Soak up the sun on Endeavour Beach—one of the island’s best stretches of sand—and you’ll be treated to sorbet, chilled towels and cold water throughout the day. If you feel like venturing out, the concierge will set up a boat trip to neighboring Grenadine Islands such as Bequia and the undeveloped Tobago Cays archipelago. Don’t be surprised if you bump into a celebrity on your morning stroll through the island’s pastel-hued town—Mick Jagger has a house on Mustique.
Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita
Mauritius is known for its pristine white sand beaches—some of the best in the world—and Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita has three of its own, all lining a lagoon. Combining modern Mauritian style (open-air architecture, thatched roofs and wooden decks) with indulgent amenities (outdoor showers and private plunge pools), this Indian Ocean resort is situated on the east side of Mauritius—walk across a wooden bridge to reach part of the resort on a private island. When you aren’t spotting marine life from the glass-bottomed boat or attending a yoga class, take advantage of the 18-hole golf course—guests have complimentary (and unlimited) access to the fairway—and the overwater spa that uses ingredients such as aloe vera and lemongrass cut fresh from the garden.
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
Maui’s only Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel rests on the golden stretch of Wailea Beach. The 380-room resort has a laidback vibe with private lanais in each room and contemporary Hawaiian-inspired décor. The resort’s three pools—including a lagoon-style pool with a waterslide and a tranquil adults-only pool featuring Missoni-designed cabanas—are staffed by pool attendants offering perks from sunblock to Evian spritzes.
Viceroy Anguilla
Straddling a bluff between two bays, this Anguilla hotel is located on two of the island’s 33 powdery white sand beaches—with a total of 3,200 feet of beachfront. Most of the sophisticated Kelly Wearstler-designed rooms—complete with travertine marble floors, four-poster beds and balconies—have private pools. Revamped in 2011, the Anguilla resort offers five stylish restaurants, an 8,000-square-foot spa and a saltwater infinity pool set atop the bluff. The beautiful beaches feel deserted—despite the resort’s umbrella and towel service.

Japan's Amazing Manga Cafés

Manga KissaPhoto: Eliazar Parra Cardenas
If you’re traveling on a shoestring in Japan, or just want a unique experience, manga kissas may be the thing for you. These Japanese institutions are a combination of comic book libraries and cafés. And not only are they are a great place to relax after a full day exploring the streets of a new Japanese city, they can also be a destination all on their own.

Manga, a Japanese word meaning “humorous pictures”, became hugely popular in Japan during the 20th century. The artistic style and large-eyed, small-mouthed characters displaying larger-than-life emotions make manga easy to identify with. Relatively speaking, manga is only really beginning to gain popularity among young people in the United States, but in Japan it is read and loved by all generations. In fact, manga writers and artists in Japan enjoy as much prestige and respect as their more literary and artistic counterparts in the West. There are many genres of manga, from romance to action and adventure.

Since Manga is so popular, the advent of the manga café is perhaps not that surprising. These cafés started out in the 1970s as places in which to read comics and drink coffee. Since then, however, they have morphed into something new. Now, most manga cafés provide computer cubicles equipped with Internet access, video games and DVDs, in addition to the thousands of comic books available.

Many manga cafés are located near train stations and have hourly rates for the services they provide. Commuters can spend an hour or two reading comic books while they wait for their train. Or, if they happen to miss the last train to their destination, they can spend the whole night in the manga kissa at a discounted price. Since these cafés are open 24 hours a day, they provide a cheap alternative to hotels.

Although the majority of these Japanese institutions don’t provide beds, their chairs are reportedly comfortable, and many even offer showers. Sodas and other drinks come included in the price and are available at an open bar where patrons are free to help themselves. Meanwhile, food can be purchased from vending machines, with a selection that usually includes ice cream, pot noodles and sandwiches.

Due to the high cost of renting apartments, some Japanese youths have opted to live in the manga kissas long term, paying a set rate for every week or month they spend in them. Homeless people have also apparently used these cafés as places in which to shower and sleep in a relatively comfortable and safe environment.

While it may not be your first choice for a place to stay, these manga cafés are surely worth the visit. Not only are they a fascinating conglomeration of library, café and hotel, they are a unique and interesting part of Japanese culture.

The sleeper in Seattle: Orlando may be the perennial No. 1 pick our list of Top 10 Summer Destinations, but newcomer and budget-friendly Seattle soared to No. 3.
By Derek Brown

Several new cities are trending this summer for future hotel and vacation package bookings, including Boston, Denver and Seattle — which took spots away from Punta Cana, San Diego and Riviera Maya.  Rising gas prices and limited air capacity have pushed airfare higher, making this year — more than ever — the time to seize the deals and comparison shop online.  So stay flexible, book early and enjoy the summer!
